“The first step in a remodeling project is selecting your general contractor. Choosing the right firm can be challenging – the Milwaukee area is saturated with remodelers. It makes the decision tough, but many choices mean a greater likelihood of finding the remodeler best suited to your project and your personality.”

Some thoughts on the process –

There are several ways to find qualified contractors. The first and best method is a referral from someone who has had a personal experience with a remodeler. Look for more than a nice finished product. Ask what problems arose along the way and how those problems were resolved.

If you do not know of anyone who has been through a remodel, here are some other ways I would recommend going about hiring a reputable contractor:

Contact your local building inspector. An inspector will have first-hand knowledge of the quality of work and can give you an unbiased opinion.

Ask about some of the subcontractors and vendors they work with. You may then choose to contact these other businesses and ask them about their working relationship. How long have you worked together? Are they organized? Do they pay their bills on time?

Lastly, you could contact their bank and ask about the financial health of the company. The relationship they have with their financial institution can say a lot about a company.
